Expensive, collectible Watches are much more than simple Timepieces. They are often valued much more for their workmanship and aesthetic appeal, even though there mechanical movements are much less accurate than the less expensive modern quartz movements.
The most accurate watches of today have radio-controlled movements that are miniaturized portable versions of a radio clock.
There are several different markets for Watches, ranging from very inexpensive but accurate watches intended mainly for the purpose of telling the correct time.
Then there are extremely expensive watches that serve mainly as personal accessories, and as examples of high achievement in miniaturization and precision mechanical engineering.
Still another market is that of “geek watches” watches that not only tell the time, but incorporate computers, satellite navigation, complications of various orders, and many other features that are often quite removed from the original concept of being a Timepiece.
Most companies that produce watches specialize in one of these markets.
Companies such as Gucci Patek Phillipe or Jaeger-LeCoultre specialize in watches as jewelry or fine mechanical devices.
Higher end companies such as Rolex, Rado, Omega, Tag Heuer and Breitling to mention just a few of my favourites all make mass-produced watches, mostly done completely with machines.
Companies such as Casio specialize in watches as timepieces and or multifunctional computers.
Since watches are considered by many to be both functional and attractive, there are many types and manufacturers to choose from.
Swiss made Watches had a reputation of being some of the finest in the world.
Leading American watchmakers includ Elgin, Gruen, Hamilton, and Illinois. Hamilton is generally considered as having the finest early American movements, while the art deco styling of The Illinois Watch Company was unsurpassed worldwide.
Early Gruen Curvex models remain very desired for how they entwined form and function, and Elgin had the reputation of being the most popular Watch made.
